IMMERSIVE EDUCATION DAY AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY

Date: December 8, 2007 from 2-5pm
Location: Harvard University- Lecture Hall in Longfellow Hall -13 Appian Way Cambridge, MA

Speakers: Aaron E. Walsh, Gene Koo, Timothy J. Magner, Jeff Orkin, John Carfora.

Description: This event is open to the public. Numerous colleges and universities are teaming up to display the benefits of game-based knowledge and second life programs, and how they can be useful to classroom teachings today.

Immersive Education is popular because the student doesn't have to be sitting in the actual classroom to learn. Through 3D graphics, voice chat, and web cameras students can interact with others through the use of second life. Immersive Education supports individual learning as
well as collaborative learning-- making the program appealing to everyone.

Biographies

Aaron Walsh, Director of the Grid Institute at Boston College has won numerous awards for his work on the media grid. In 2007, Walsh was named one of the top forty most innovative people in the Information Technology world. Walsh's work on Eagle Eye at Boston College has been effective and was the outgrowth of Virtual Reality.

Gene Koo, is focusing his research on the impact of technological advances in legal education and legal practice. Koo founded Legal Aid University which helps underprivledged lawyers across the nation providing training and support.

Timothy Magner, has over 15 years of experience with educational technology in schools. He is on the senior staff of the Office of Technology- responsible for implementing educational tools and technologies in school systems. Magner has bounced around school systems teaching internationally- and now brings his knowledge and experience of educational technology to schools in the United States.

Mid-term Assignment # 2

Here are my three interesting facts about Immersive Education.

1) I like how Immersive Education targets the individual and the group. One of their main goals is to make their education program a group effort and as well, a self-learning program.

2) I thought it was interesting that Boston College, alongside other local colleges and universities, are hoping to have Immersive Education available to everyone on campus, including students, faculty, and staff.

3) Immersive Education is interesting because it is appealing to everyone, and forces people to communicate in a different way-- through the internet. Being able to be on-line and not in the classroom is great because you can do it on your own time-- which proves to be sucessful for people who have full-time jobs.
